“with all the odds thrown, do you still want to get even? time is numbered”
Barnaby Crimp did not mind the odds. As the cosmos’s premier metaphysical accountant, he dealt with odd numbers every day: threes, sevens, and those deeply unsettling prime numbers that refused to divide cleanly.
But today, the universe was literally throwing the odds at him.
A flying 3 zipped past his left ear, embedding itself into the drywall. It was followed closely by a rogue 101 that shattered his desk lamp. The Great Cosmic Balance was glitching, and the department of Fate was aggressively hurling odd numbers into his cubicle.

“Barnaby!” crackled the intercom. It was his supervisor, a multi-dimensional entity who sounded like grinding gears. “The system is crashing. With all the odds thrown, do you still want to get even?”
Barnaby ducked as a sharp, metallic 7 clipped his shoulder. Getting “even” was an executive mandate. If he couldn’t balance the ledger with some solid, stable even numbers—twos, fours, maybe a comforting eight—the local space-time continuum would fold like a cheap accordion.
“I’m trying!” Barnaby shouted back, pulling a glowing digital abacus from his drawer. “But the data stream is compromised!”
“Well, hurry,” the intercom buzzed. “Your time is numbered.”
Barnaby winced. Literally, his time was numbered. He looked down at his wristwatch. Instead of hands or digital ticks, the face of the watch displayed a rapidly countdown sequence of random, erratic odd digits: 999, 997, 995…
The air in the cubicle grew heavy. The walls began to ripple with prime-number energy. Barnaby knew that if the clock struck an absolute zero, he would cease to exist, or worse, be reassigned to Department Management.
He needed an equalizer. He needed divisibility.
Dodging a barrage of projectile 5s, Barnaby lunged across the floor toward the master terminal. His watch read 13. The universe loved a dramatic finale.
With a definitive smirk, Barnaby didn’t look for an even number to fight back. He used the ultimate cosmic loophole. He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a glowing, ethereal decimal point, and slammed it directly into the incoming wave of odds.
Smash.
The rogue 7 became a 3.5. The flying 3 became a 1.5.
By introducing fractions, he shattered the absolute tyranny of the integers. The integers fractured, collided, and recombined. Two halves of a broken three fused instantly into a perfectly stable, beautifully placid 4.
The alarms fell silent. The flying numbers dropped to the floor, instantly neutralizing into a neat pile of symmetrical eights and sixes.
Barnaby stood up, dusted the math off his trousers, and looked at his watch. It now read a perfectly calm, crisp, even 10:00.
The intercom clicked. “Impressive work, Crimp. You balanced the sheet.”
“Just doing the math,” Barnaby said, straightening his tie. “After all, you can’t defy the odds without breaking a few digits.”
